These are typical ranges only — each brand has its own chart with different sizes such as short (S) and tall (T) versions. Always use the manufacturer’s chart for the model you are buying.

Wetsuit thickness by water temperature

Water temperatureSuggested suit
Above 75°F (24°C)Rash guard or 1–2 mm top
65–75°F (18–24°C)2 mm shorty or 3/2 mm spring suit
58–65°F (14–18°C)3/2 mm full suit
52–58°F (11–14°C)4/3 mm full suit, boots optional
43–52°F (6–11°C)5/4 mm or 5/4/3 mm with hood and boots
Below 43°F (6°C)6/5 mm with hood, gloves and boots

The first number is the torso thickness and the second the arms and legs. Wind, air temperature, activity level and how cold you run all matter — divers who are less active usually need more warmth than surfers at the same water temperature.

How a wetsuit should fit

How to measure

  1. Height without shoes.
  2. Weight.
  3. Chest or bust at the fullest part.
  4. Waist at the narrowest part.
  5. Hips at the widest part.
  6. Inseam, if the brand lists it.

If your height and weight point to different sizes, the chest and weight usually matter most; try both if you can.

Frequently asked questions

How tight should a wetsuit be?

Snug like a second skin, with no loose folds, but still allowing full movement.

What thickness wetsuit do I need?

It depends on water temperature: 3/2 mm for about 58–65°F, 4/3 mm for 52–58°F, 5/4 mm below that.

What does 4/3 mean?

4 mm neoprene on the torso and 3 mm on arms and legs.

Should I size up or down?

Choose by the brand’s chart; if between sizes, try both — a suit that is too loose lets water flush through.

Was AI used to create the charts?

The charts were generated by script and text drafted with AI assistance, then reviewed before publishing. Brand charts take priority.
